Biodiscovery Centre Inspires Year 12 Students
On Wednesday 7 May the Year 12 Biology students visited the Biodiscovery Centre at Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research.
Students began the day with a competitive game modelling the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Students then worked in the laboratory to amplify two segments of a family’s genome using PCR to confirm family connection and to diagnose a rare genetic condition. After running their samples in an electrophoresis gel, students analysed their results.
The group were treated to a tour of the research labs where they got a glimpse of the work done by research scientists.
The day was a fun and engaging opportunity for students to apply their knowledge from the classroom in a working laboratory setting.
