Students Get into Resources
Late Term 2 the Get into Resources day at North Metropolitan TAFE’s East Perth campus enabled our Year 10 students to spend the morning trying an incredible range of hands-on activities based on real work in the resources industry.
These included using drones and other automated technology to complete tasks as a team and within a given time frame, simulated operation of underground mining equipment to undertake drilling and exploring, and experiments to test soil suitability for environmental repatriation.
In the afternoon students toured the exhibition space where they met resources industry professionals, techs and trades from companies including Fortescue, Rio Tinto, Byrnecut, Northern Star and the Australian Institute of Geoscientists. The students spoke one-on-one with these people finding out exactly what they do, the pathway they took to get there and the opportunities available in the industry.
A group of Year students in Years 9 – 12 also participated in the Get into Resources Career Taster for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students which saw them gain valuable firsthand insights from resources industry employers and complete practical tasks with TAFE trainers in fields as diverse as plumbing, electrical and coding. The applied activities and authentic career conversations opened our students minds’ to the variety of employment settings and opportunities available to them in the resources industry.
