Beauty Career Taster
Career Tasters are brilliant one day experiences whereby students visit a training venue - usually a TAFE campus - and are immersed in a practical training activity. They also learn about courses available and training and employment pathways.
This week’s opportunity was a Beauty Career Taster. The morning commenced with a tour of North Metropolitan TAFE’s McClarty Health Campus (in Joondalup) where the group of Year 9s saw the hospital ward training facilities and had their queries about the Health courses on offer answered.
Once in the industry-styled training room, our students gained current information about the range of training levels and courses delivered at North Metropolitan TAFE campuses. They learned about the career opportunities that a job in the beauty and wellness industry offers; from working on a cruise ship or luxury hotel to owning and managing your own business.
The Year 9s then worked in pairs to give each other a mini manicure, applying the professional manners, safety and cleanliness procedures demonstrated to them by the TAFE trainer. The final activity was the completion of a make-up plan which involved using a range of make-up products to communicate ideas to a client and colleagues.
All sixteen of the group thoroughly enjoyed the experience and noted highlights including:
‘Well organised fun and interactive, hands-on activities’
‘Learning how to communicate with a client’
‘Gaining an understanding of how the beauty industry can influence my future’
‘Being given the opportunity to learn about many courses and levels of qualifications, not just beauty’
‘Spending time at the peaceful and calm campus’
‘Experiencing a sample of what TAFE is like and what to expect’
